As a major he was awarded the D.S.O. (London Gazetted date 01/01/1917) for his actions at the Somme in 1916. As T/Lt. Col awarded a bar to his D.S.O (London Gazetted date 01/01/1919) for his actions at the Aisne 1918.

Awarded the French Legion d'Honneur (London Gazetted date 11th March 1919) - Bt. Maj. (T/Lt.-Col.)

 

He commanded the 10th Battlion Worcestershire Regiment from 4th July 1916 to 22nd June 1918. He was absent for a short period from 10th November to 13th December 1916 and Lieutenant-Colonel William Allan Bowen temporary took command.

24th November 1937 granted temporary rank of Brigadier whilst employed as a Brigadier in the Teritorial Army.

Col D. M. A. Sole, D.S.O. (285) retired pay (Reserve of Officers) reverts to retired pay, 12th February 1943, and is regranted the hon rank of Brigadier.
