The Commander-in-Chief's Certificate is not an strictly an award as there is no medal to signify it, nor are the persons to whom it is given recorded in the London Gazette. In most cases they were awarded as a consolation prize to persons who were nominated for a higher award but were unsuccessful in their claim. Also some men who were awarded a foreign decoration also received a Commander-in-Chief's Certificate. There were a number of different variants to the certificate but the message was the same.
