Colonel Henry James Cumming LATTEY, T.D., D.L. (50273)

Commanded the 7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment from March 1947 to June 1951.

Henry James Cumming Lattey was born in Worcester on the 4th January 1907. His intention after school at Downside College, was to gain a commission in the Regular Army but ill health whilst at Sandhurst denied him this ambition and instead he opted for service in the Territorial Army. He was commissioned in 1931 and joined 8th Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment.

He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 9th May 1934 and to Captain on the 7th July 1937.

In 1939 he was posted to H.Q. 144 T.A. Brigade as a Staff Captain and attended a shortened staff college course. He was on active service in France in 1940 and took part in the withdrawal to Dunkirk. After a further short spell with the 8th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment he was appointed D.A.A.Q.M.G. in H.Q. 48 Division. Then in 1943 he was appointed A.A. & Q.M.G. in H.Q. Lahore District, India.

After the War, he continued his T.A. service and on the 1st May 1947 promoted to Lieut.-Colonel. He was appointed C.O. of 7th Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment (T.A.), when it was reformed in March 1947. He held this appointment until retiring in 1951. In 1959 he became Hon. Colonel of the 7th Battalion but he also continued to work for the Territorial Army and Army Cadet Force in a wider capacity, serving as Chairman of The Worcestershire T.A.V.R. Association from 1956 to 1967 and President of the Worcester A.C.F. League from 1970-1980. He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire in 1955 and also served as High Sheriff of the county in 1964.

Colonel Henry James C. Lattey, died in Worcester on 21st July 1981, at the age of 74. Many members of the Regiment attended his funeral on 28th July 1981.
