Colonel of the 36th Regiment of Foot (became 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in 1881)
Appointed Colonel on 23rd July 1851 to 30th October 1854
An illegitimate son of King William IV., and brother of the first Earl of Munster, he was born on 9th December 1799; and entered the army on 12th May 1814, as Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards, in which regiment he served until promoted to Captain in the Cape Corps of Infantry on 23rd February 1820.
On the 9th August 1820, he was transferred to the 11th Regiment, and was advanced to the rank of Major on 10th January 1822. He served in Ireland from 1822 to 1824, on 11th April in which year he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel of the 11th Regiment. On the 2nd of June 1825, he was transferred to the command of the 7th Royal Fusileers, joining that regiment at Corfu in May 1826. In 1828 the Royal Fusileers moved to Malta.
On the 6th of May 1831, he was appointed extra aide-de-camp to the king with the rank of Colonel in the army.
On the 24th of August 1832, he exchanged from the 7th Royal Fusileers to half-pay, unattached, on receiving the appointment of assistant Adjutant-General at the Horse Guards, which he held until promoted to Major-General on the 23rd of November 1841.
He was Lieutenant-Governor of Portsmouth from 1817 until the year 1851. On the 23rd of July 1851, he was appointed Colonel of the 36th Regiment, and was advanced to the rank of Lieutenant-General on the 11th of November 1851.
In 1852 he was appointed commander-in-chief at Bombay, which appointment he held until his death, which occurred at Porunder, Bombay, on the 30th of October 1854, at the age of 54 years.
