Lieut.-Colonel John Francis EGERTON

John Francis Egerton was born 7th November 1846, the third son of the Reverend William Henry Egerton M.A. Rector of Whitchurch, Shropshire and Prebendary of Lichfield, and Louisa Cunliffe.

He was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and was commissioned in to the 36th Foot by purchase on the 21st August 1866, with the rank of Ensign.

On the 9th February 1870 he was promoted to Lieutenant and to Captain on the 26th November 1879.

On the 10th July 1883 he was appointed Adjutant in the 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.

On the 27th August 1884 he was promoted to rank of Major.

On the 9th October 1893 he was promoted to Lieut.-Colonel and given command of the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.

Lieut.-Colonel John Francis Egerton retired from the army on the 11th December 1895.

He never married.

Just 3 years later he died on the 26th December 1898, age 52.

His Memorial is at St. Alkmund's Church, Whitchurch, Shrosphire - The inscription reads; "To the glory of God and in affectionate remembrance of Lieut.-Colonel John Francis Egerton (third son of the Rev. William Henry Egerton M.A. Rector of Whitchurch and Preb. Lich.) late commanding 2nd Worcestershire (36th) Regiment in which he served 29 years. Born 1846 Died 1898. Erected by his brother officers."
