Second Lieutenant Alexander Dunkley

Second Lieutenant Alexander Dunkley of the 12th Battalion was attached to the 9th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, he died of wounds at Mesopotamia on the 9th April 1916.

Alexander Dunkley was born in East Plumstead on 5th January 1892. He was educated at Aske’s School, Hatcham, where in 1909 he won a Gold Medal for Science and Mathematics. He then went to University College London, 1910-12 where he gained a B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics; he was also a member of the University O.T.C. He then entered the teaching profession and when the war broke out was an Assistant Master at the High School for Boys, Southend-on-Sea, and an officer in the School Cadet Corps.

Entering the Army, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 12th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. He embarked for Egypt and Mesopotamia on 7th December 1915, arriving at Port Said on 8th February 1915 and Basra on 11th March 1915. He was then attached to the 9th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, he served in the Kut Relief Force. In an attack on the Turks before Sanna-i-Yat on 9th April 1916, he was reported severely wounded and missing.

On 2nd June 1917 a Court of Inquiry concluded that 2nd Lieutenant Dunkley had died of wounds. Having no known grave, his name was commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. He was the son of Alfred and Fanny Isabel Dunkley of 71 Maxey Road, Plumstead and the husband of Emily Dunkley of 22 Swettenham Place, Plumstead.
