Alfred Palmer was recommended for an Immediate Military Medal by the Commanding Officer, Lieut.-Col. R. E. Osborne-Smith in October 1944.

Military Medal (London Gazette 1st March 1945)

Citation:

“During the attack on ELST on 24th September 1944, Corporal PALMER was Section Commander of the forward Section of the leading Platoon of ‘D’ Company. An enemy section post was located; Corporal PALMER approached from the right flank, and on taking the first obstacle, a hedge, his automatic was struck by a bullet from another enemy post five yards away. Corporal PALMER held on to his weapon, and single handed without regard for his own personal safety, completely wiped out the post leaving five enemy dead, so enabling his section to attack the located enemy post.”
