Helmet Plates

Below are some examples of the different helmet plates which were worn on blue cloth helmets.

29th REGIMENT HELMET PLATE 1878-1881

This is an 29th Regiment officers helmet plate which was used fro 1878 to 1881.  The plate was in Gilt with the '29' on a black leather background in the centre of the Garter.  It is interesting to note that this plate was not in universal use, as the regiment at the time were under orders for India, and officers were ordered to equip themselves with shakos instead of blue cloth helmets.

29th REGT. WHITE HELMET PLATE 1879-1883

This plate was used on tropical white helmets for the first time in India around 1879.  Initially the white helmet was a lightweight version of the blue cloth home service.  However, several design changes were made until the final version was adopted, which is used today by the Royal Marines.

WORCESTERSHIRE HELMET PLATE 1883

The Worcestershire Regiment was formed in 1881 and combined the 29th, 36th, Militia and Volunteers. Interestingly this plate used the 'Tower' motif of the Militia, the star of the 29th and the motto 'FIRM' from the 36th. Made of Gilding metal stamped in one piece. Similar version of this plate was used by the 2nd Volunteers Battalion where 'FIRM' was replaced with '2ND VOLR BN'

WORCESTERSHIRE HELMET PLATE 1901-1923

Worcestershire Regiment officers' used this plate from 1901 to 1923.  Note the St. Edward's crown at the top. An identical version of this plate was used from 1890 to 1901 the main difference was it used the Imperial crown at the top. The 2nd Volunteers Battalion officers used a similar version 1901-1908.

WORCESTERSHIRE MILITIA 1878-1881

This silver helmet plate was used by Officers' of the Worcestershire Militia from 1878 to 1881.  The central tower was on a black velvet cloth.  It is interesting to note the county scroll 'WORCESTER' below the centre Garter. In another version of this plate the Garter was inscribed with 'WORCESTER MILITIA'
instead of the county scroll.

WORCESTERSHIRE RIFLES 1880-1890

Both battalions of the Worcestershire Rifle Volunteers adopted a Maltese cross type of plate. This example is in blackened brass and was worn by the lower ranks.  Officers and staff-sergeants the plate was in white metal. There were many versions of this helmet plate but all used the Pear Tree at its centre.

The cloth helmet was first introduced in 1878. This is an example of a officers helmet made of dark blue cloth.  The standard helmet plate used was a crowned star, on which a Garter, surrounded by a laurel wreath, and having the regiment badge or number in the centre.  The plates were made usually in several pieces, designed to be detachable and on some occasions was worn as separate pieces.  The officers' plate was of gilt or silver, the distinctive feature of the officers plate is that the principal rays are flattened.
