Worcestershire Cathedral - 2nd & 3rd Battalion Nominal Roll (1914)

In the Cathedral there is a large cabinet which holds the names of all officers, N.C.O.'s and men of the 2nd and 3rd Battalions who embarked for France in August 1914. In this cabinet is the "Mons Banner" and the names, in gilt, are on the folding doors of the Cabinet.

Originally the cabinet with the Nominal Roll was positioned against the wall of the Cathedral but has since been moved to its current position.

A large number of the men on the 2nd Battalion Roll (about 60% of the total named) were also present at the famous battle of Gheluvelt on the 31st October 1914.

ERRORS AND OMISSIONS TO 2ND BATTALION WORCESTERSHIRE REGT. NOMINAL ROLL

In 1938 a number of omissions and errors were spotted on the Nominal Roll in Worcester Cathedral. These are detailed below:

1.—OMISSION : Serjeant W. Adkins, 'D' Company, No. 8983. He embarked with the Battalion and served with it throughout the war. He was serving with the Battalion at Aldershot in August 1914, and had been with the Battalion the previous years in India and Ceylon.

2.—OMISSION : Lance-Serjeant F. Sutton, 'B' Company, Regimental No. 6551 (a native of Worcester).
He embarked with the Battalion in August 1914, he was serving with the Battalion at Aldershot and, like Adkins, had served for years with the Battalion in India and Ceylon. He was an outstanding soldier of very gallant action at the Battle of Gheluvelt on the 31st October 1914, for which he was decorated with the D.C.M. He was later commissioned, wounded, and retired as Captain.

NAMES ON THE ROLLS TO BE DELETED

1.—ERROR : C.S.M. J. Collins. This N.C.O. was promoted R.S.M. and left the Battalion for another unit while the Battalion was still at Aldershot. He did not embark with the Battalion and did not serve with the Battalion at any time during the War.

2.—ERROR : Band Serjeant F. Hicks, No. 4482. He was serving with the Battalion at Aldershot and remained in England in charge of the Band-boys of the Battalion, when we left Aldershot in August, 1914.
