Private Arthur Edwin Roy STACEY (14419045)

Arthur Stacey was recommended for an Immediate Military Medal by the Commanding Officer, Lieut.-Col. R. E. Osborne-Smith in August 1944.

Military Medal (London Gazette 1st March 1945)

 
Citation:
“In the attack on Berjou on 17th August 1944, an enemy Anti-Tank weapon was engaging a tank in support of ‘D’ Company and it fired one round. Private STACEY went straight in with his bren, firing from the hip, and killed the two enemy manning the weapon in spite of rifle fire from them.

Throughout the remainder of the action he was an example to his Platoon, and his accurate fire enabled several pockets of enemy to be captured or killed.”

  
Notes: During this action his Platoon was only 12 strong but they managed to capture 25 enemy.

He was later promoted to Lance Corporal.

Background:
Arthur Stacey was born at Shaftesbury, Dorset in 1925. He joined the Worcestershire Regiment and landed in Normandy with ‘B’ Company. He was promoted Lance Corporal at the end of August 1944.
