Private Jack HAYNES (5258262)

Jack Haynes was recommended for the Medal of the Bronze Star (Netherlands) by the Commanding Officer, Lieut.-Col. C. P. G. Wills in August 1945.

Citation:
“Throughout the fighting in the trust to ARNHEM in September/October 1944, Private HAYNES displayed outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty. As Platoon runner, he carried out his duties in the fighting round and in ELST, under heavy shell and small arms fire, showing great coolness. His personal example was an inspiration to his comrades and on two occasions, when Section Commanders were wounded, he temporarily took over command of their sections, reorganized them and sited their positions, returning to Platoon HQ under fire to report.”

Background:
Jack Haynes was born in Worcester on the 4th September 1909. He joined the Worcestershire Regiment in 1940 and after his initial infantry training at Norton Barracks was posted to 11th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment at Hereford. In January 1943 the 11th Battalion was disbanded and became the new 1st Battalion.

He landed with the 1st Battalion in Normandy in June 1944 with 14 Platoon, ‘C’ Company.
 

In addition to the Netherlands Bronze Star Medal he was also awarded with a Commander-in-Chiefs certificate.

Jack Haynes died in Worcester on the 18th January 1991, age 81.
