But then, why not hazard a guess? Could William Russell have been with one of the battalions in Gallipol? 4th or 9th?

Best regards,

2nd Btn Man

Postby Andy Horton » Mon Sep 24, 2007 11:14 am

Dear All

Lars from Sweden very kindly gave me details of this forum and the research that you are undertaking.

I am hoping that you might be able to help me, or point me in the right direction.

I am researching the life of Laban Harris who was private 12846 in the 2nd Btn Worcesters I have his mic which states he entered France on the 12/8/1914

What I do know so far is:
Born 1894 and lived in Abbots Morton, enlisted 5th January 1912
Discharged 13/7/1915 and awarded a SWB

I hope I am not out of order, but is there a roll of who was at Gheluvelt and obviously was my man there? Any help gratefully appreciated and if anyone would like a copy of his mic and swb form they would be very welcome.

Regards

Andy

Laban Harris

Postby peter » Tue Sep 25, 2007 3:42 pm

Hi Andy

Mick and myself are working on a list of men from the 2nd Bn. Worcesters who were at Gheluvelt on 31st October 1914. It is early days and we have a way to go before we can put out an actual listing. At present all I can confirm for you is that Pte.12846 L. Harris did embark for France on the 12.8.1914. He is listed on the Worcester Cathedral Roll for August 1914 (there are two L. Harris's) and he is on the Star List. Unless he was wounded before 31.10.14 then he could be one of the men who took part in the action that day. I'm checking casualty lists from Berrows Weekly, Worcester Herald etc. at the moment so from a list of around 1250 men we need to half this number to come to a figure of about 600 men that were at Gheluvelt. Those KIA and DoW are already done so its a case of eliminating the wounded men from the list. Andy I will post you a message on this forum if we come up with any positive results on your man. If you could let us have a copy of his MIC and SWB that would be most appreciated.

My Grandfather enlisted on th 19th February 1912 so could well have trained with and known Laban.

THank's Allan, every information that helps building a better picture is valuable, i appreciate your efforts. I guess that would make it impossible for him to be in place at Gheluvelt. Hopefully I'll be able to ascertain which btn he served in at Gallipoli, as I understand that he later was sent to that theatre.

Kind regards
Lars

Hi Ravrick,

10428 Smith, F. is on the Worcester Cathedral Roll and the Star list. My Granfather 13049 Tullett F.W. 2nd Bn. Worcesters was also reported wounded in the Worcester Herald for January 2nd 1915 so they could both have been wounded in the same action.

Rick

Have you had any luck finding the informtion regarding J. Vaughan 'D' Company being a charger. I mentioned before my Grandfather was in 'D' Company and any further details would be of great help in our efforts at listing the men from 2nd Bn. Worcesters who were at Gheluvelt 31st October 1914. It will soon be the 93rd Anniversary of the day the Worcestes helped save the day.

Pte JT Mills

Postby jtmills » Tue Nov 20, 2007 11:08 pm

I am interested in finding out if my great-uncle, Pte John T Mills, 7273, was one of the Gheluvelt men. He certainly went overseas with the 2nd Bn in 1914 and was still with them at the time of his death, 15 May 1915 at Festubert.

Because of him I am now in the process of trying to write a book on the battle of Festubert, so he has been an inspiration. I have managed to obtain a thumbnail photo of him from the Bham Weekly Post, in which it mentions his brother Walter has also been wounded in France, but does not mention a regiment. Oh well, you can't have everything.

Hi Rob

We have a data base of just over 1500 names of men from 2nd Bn. Worcesters who went to France between August and November 1914. On that list is your great uncle 7273 Pte. John Thomas Mills who was KiA on the 15/5/15. He was the son of James and Selina. At the moment it is case of eliminating men who were killed and wounded from the list to come up with the names of those at Gheluvelt. So far we have not come across 7273 J.T. Mills amongst the wounded so he is down as a Yes/Maybe. Its a case of watch this space for more information, but if you do discover he was at Gheluvelt please let us know. On the star list he is down as embarking for France on the 12th September 1914. He is not on the Worcester Cathedral Roll. On the list we have a another John T. Mills Regimental No. 7778.
